Head and Neck Conditions

Head and neck conditions including migraine headache and various forms of cancer can be quite serious and painful. Fortunately, Dr. Kitt of our Bakersfield ENT Clinic has a specialization in this field to help our patients. Please see a summary of some the conditions that are most typical of head and neck conditions that we treat at our Bakersfield Clinic.

  1. Migraine Headache and Facial Pain - Headaches are perhaps the most common symptom in our body. It involves many organs in the head and neck region and many specialists have their shares of headaches! Ear, nose, and throat specialists must exercise their expertise in looking for their causes within their structures before referring headache patients to neurologists or other specialist. Sinusitis may cause all forms of headaches depending of their locations and severity. Facial pain is another common symptom in the head and neck structure. It is sometimes associated with temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ). The jaw joint soft tissue becomes degenerative. Symptoms may include restricted range of motion in the jaw, a “clicking” noise, a pain which is described as an “earache”, Often made worse by chewing, opening the mouth wide and yawning. The causes are complex such as poor dentition, unfitted dentures, grinding of teeth, and others.

  2. Cancer of the head, neck, face, and upper respiratory tracts - are serious conditions. They currently account for about 3% of all cancers in the United States. These tend to be more common among men and people who are over 50 years old. These conditions are associated with carcinogens, irritants, and environmental factors. HPV and special viruses may precipitate oral and throat cancers. Patients with suspicious conditions must require thorough follow-up before appropriate treatment can be implemented. Here are a few symptoms of head and neck cancer:

    • A lump or sore that is not healing (typically these will be in an area inside the nose, mouth or throat)
    • Difficulty swallowing food or liquids
    • Trouble breathing due to obstruction or pain in the throat
    • Difficulty speaking because of pain
    • A prolonged change in the voice causing hoarseness

Should you or a family member experience any of these symptoms it is very important that you have an examination by a specialist as soon as possible. At our Bakersfield ENT Clinic we have specialized in this area and have years of experience in the diagnosis of head and neck cancer. Dr. Kitt has in fact completed a program at the University of Iowa in Advanced Head and Neck Cancer treatment.
